DescriptionThis is a bilingual (Mopan-English) book about Mangroves with a focus on the intersection of traditional ecological knowledge of the Mopan people of Belize and marine conservation.

The authors of the Maya Mopán book are Robby Thigpen, Juan Ico and Richard Peck. The Forward was written by Midonio Cal.

Juan Ico heard about our project and contacted me telling that the Mopán of San Jose Village wanted books like this for their school. We hope to bring printed copies of these book to San Jose Village after the threat of the pandemic has passed.

This will surely be the number one book that I will personally request for my teachers and student to use in their regular session. In the past, we have used the English books which in many cases children often have difficulty in understanding the terms used.

The Mopán also live in southern Belize and Guatemala.

Mopán [mop] paired with English [en] for Belize. This is the first biocultural STEM curriculum written in Maya Mopán. My Mopán brothers that ethnotranslated this curriculum are all from San Jose Village, Toledo, Belize. This is the fifth language in Belize where we used our new class of language documentation tools to document the language used to discuss concrete and tangle aspects of the ecosystems that the Mopán of Belize depend on for food security etc. Belize now has at least one science book written in each Indigenous and Creole language within its borders.
