DescriptionThis video documents part of a ritual called "kanan Kajwaltik" (caring for the sacred book) that takes place every year during three days, the first through the third of January. It is called Kajwaltik in Tseltal by colonial ordinance (?), considered traditionally to be the document that the founders of the village of Oxchuc brought with them. This sacred book is kept during the whole year in a box in the house of the mayor, but during these days it is taken out and kept in the hall of the ancients in the municipal house and it is watched over by the traditional authorities (in Tseltal ch'uy k'aaletik), the mayors (alkaletik) and extuletik, who dedicate prayers to it.
