Extensive discussion of Baniwa history, focusing on the prophet movements from the mid-to-late 19th century in the Upper rio Negro region, including prophet movements among Tukanoan peoples of the Uaupes River. The second major part interprets the modal myth of Kuwai and its four main themes of shamanism, cultural transmission, ancestors, and human relations to the spirit world.
