DescriptionThe festival of San Antonio is a week-long celebration where the Cañari community within Quilloac honor their patron Saint - St. Anthony of Padua. The most intensive day of celebration begins at the Catholic church in the center of Cañar with a mass. After the mass, men dance with vacas locas (crazy cows) and kick off a day-long pilgrimage of the patron saint through town accompanied by a brass band (mestizo), and chirimía (dulzaína) & drum (Cañari) until the procession ends on the outskirts of town in Junducuchu where a pampamesa (communal meal) is served, rukuyayas (jokesters) entertain, flute music (contradanza) is played, and children and adults dance. See the interview with Francisca Solano Lasso and Ancelma Solano who are hosts (priostes) and take care of St. Anthony throughout the year for more information about Fiesta de San Antonio. See May2021_Compiled_Liner_Notes_in_English_&_Spanish.pdf for more information about the musical genres and instruments referenced or appearing in this file.
