| Description | Notebook carried by Renato Athias during his 1976 trip through Hupdë communities. The pages of the notebook contain information about each community visited: names in Hup and Portuguese, names of nearby streams [igarapés] or rivers, names of chief [capitão], clan names, the number of houses and inhabitants, and comments about distances between communities or their founding. Households are sometimes numbered, and may refer to numbered locations on village maps. The communities appear in the order in which Athias visited them on his trip from Iauareté up the Papuri river then down the Tiquié river back to Iauareté (see Athias-mapa-recto.png). Some pages have notes referencing other pages in this notebook. Athias revisited some of these communities in 1984 (see Notebook 2), and information from that later visit, including genealogy charts, has been added to some pages, sometimes in pencil on the facing page. Other pages in this notebook contain notes on Howard Reid's tripartite regional division of Hup language, sketch maps of villages and streams, a map of the community of Pin Deh (Cabari) giving the names of the people in each house, and some vocabulary notes. Found within the notebook were a vowel chart and a set of stapled notebook papers containing more genealogical charts with kin terms and a diagram of Hupdë cosmology as presented by Peter Silverwood. This notebook was water damaged after falling into a river, and can be seen in the image Athias-1984-Slides-0024.tif laid out to dry in the sun. |
