DescriptionThis collection includes materials pertaining to Renato Athias's fieldwork and research on the Hupd'äh people of the Upper Rio Negro region and other peoples of the region. Most of these materials were created by Athias during visits to Hupd'äh communities between 1974 and 1985. Other materials were created by Athias in collaboration with others in the 1990s through the 2010s, and a very small amount of materials were created by others and given to Athias.

The materials include scanned images of notebooks containing ethnographic notes and transcriptions, scanned images of color slides, analytical documents written by Athias, including his theses written in Paris, and born-digital videos depicting dabucuri exchange ceremonies, meetings about cultural practices and reenactments of myths. A collection of audio cassettes recorded by Athias has been digitized and will be added to this collection.

Most of the materials in this collection are public, however a small amount of materials in folders "Restricted Media" is not publicly available.

A guide for this collection is available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Alfonso Casasnovas materials
Two stories in the language of the "Doe-ya" (Hup) of the Traíra igarapé and the left bank of the Tiquié river collected in 1974 by Alfonso Casasnovas. The text "Boraró story" is presented in three lines: the first in Hup, the second in Tucano, and the third in Portuguese. The "Dog story" similarly translates the text into Tucano and Portuguese, with the original Hup presented in two lines, one representing running speech and the other with "separation into monosyllables for study". Casasnovas gave these two stories to Renato Athias., Dos cuentos en la lengua de los "Doe-ya" (hup) del caño Traíra igarapé y el banco izquierdo del río Tiquié recopilados en 1974 por Alfonso Casasnovas. El texo "Cuento Boraró" se presenta en tres líneas: la primera en hup, la segunda en tukano y la tercera en portugués. Black and White Prints
Black and white scans of prints of color photographs taken by Renato Athias during his visits to Hupdë communities of the Upper Rio Negro. These images accompanied the 2014 photoessay "Os caminhos dos Hupd’äh – Memórias e Documentação" [The Paths of the Huhpdë: Rememberance and Documentation] by Daniel Pereira and Renato Athias, published on Renato Athias's blog in April 2017 (http://renatoathias.blogspot.com/2017/04/#6818405961827457673). The Portuguese text of the photoessay is included within this collection. Some of the photos reproduced here also exist as color slides elsewhere in this collection. However, damage to the color slides may make these images preferable despite lacking color and having a fairly low resolution (96 dpi)., Digitalizaciones en blanco y negro de fotos en color tomadas por Renato Athias durante sus visitas a comunidades Hupdë del Alto Río Negro. Color Slides 1972-1978
Color slides made from photographs taken between 1972 and 1978 by Renato Athias during his visits to the Hupdë communities of the Upper Rio Negro. By the time these slides were scanned in 2020, the color of many of these slides had faded and most had a strong red cast over the images. These images have been color corrected by adjusting white balance with Adobe Lightroom, however, some discoloration remains in many images. Some of these images also exist as lower resolution black and white reproduction elsewhere in this collection., Diapositivas en color hechas de fotografías tomados entre 1972 y 1978 por Renato Athias durante sus visitas a comunidades hupdë del Alto Río Negro. Defending our Knowledge
Defendendo nossos Saberes [Defending our Knowledge] is a film produced by the students of the Tunui Center of the Intercultural Indigenous Degree at the Federal University of Amazonas, with the Laboratory of Visual Anthropology at Federal University of Pernambuco. The film shows how the health services of DSEI-RN [Special Indigenous Health District-Rio Negro] deal with the case of an Indigenous patient who was bitten by a snake. It shows how the Indigenous knowledge of this region of the Upper Rio Negro is seen by health care protocols. Film made in 2016., Defendendo nossos Saberes [Defendiendo nuestros Saberes] es una película realizada por los estudiantes del Centro Tunui del Grado Intercultural Indígena de la Universidad Federal de Amazonas, con el Laboratorio de Antropología Visual de la Universidad Federal de Pernambuco. Muestra como los servicios de salud del DSEI-RN [Distrito de Salud Indígena Especial - Río Negro] atiendan a un paciente indígena quien fue mordido por una culebra. Demographic and Genealogical Information
A collection of notes, graphs, and writings about the demography of Hupdë communities of the Upper Rio Negro circa 1968-2002. Some of these documents are notes and observations directly made by Renato Athias whereas others were collected by Athias from various sources in the region. Recurring themes within these materials are sketches of village plans, detailed lists of the inhabitants of each house, genealogical charts of prominent families, kinship terminology, and the distribution and prevalence of clans across Hupdë villages., Una colección de apuntes tablas, y escrituras acerca de la demografía de poblaciones hupdë del Alto Río Negro entre aproximadamente 1968 y 2002. Hãwäg and b’atìb : The Balance between Health and Disease among the Hupd’äh in the Upper Rio Negro Region, Brazil
This paper addresses recent debates about body formation and the process of health and illness among the Hupd'ah of the Uaupés, Papuri and Tiquié rivers. The ethnographic data presented here evinces the relationship between the main substances existing in the body (hãwäg and b’atìb) and manifest in the Hup physiology as well as the potential ways of understanding the processes of health and illness for this people of the Northwest Amazon. A collection of maps made or collected by Renato Athias during his research on the Hupdë communities of the Upper Rio Negro. Most of the maps are detailed sketches of the Tiquié and Papuri rivers and their tributary streams (igarapés) along which many Hupdë villages can be found., Una colección de mapas hechos o recopilados por Renato Athias a lo largo de sus investigaciones de las comunidades hupdë del Alto Río Negro. Notebook 1
Notebook carried by Renato Athias during his 1976 trip through Hupdë communities. The pages of the notebook contain information about each community visited: names in Hup and Portuguese, names of nearby streams [igarapés] or rivers, names of chief [capitão], clan names, the number of houses and inhabitants, and comments about distances between communities or their founding. Households are sometimes numbered, and may refer to numbered locations on village maps. The communities appear in the order in which Athias visited them on his trip from Iauareté up the Papuri river then down the Tiquié river back to Iauareté (see Athias-mapa-recto.png). Some pages have notes referencing other pages in this notebook. Athias revisited some of these communities in 1984 (see Notebook 2), and information from that later visit, including genealogy charts, has been added to some pages, sometimes in pencil on the facing page. Other pages in this notebook contain notes on Howard Reid's tripartite regional division of Hup language, sketch maps of villages and streams, a map of the community of Pin Deh (Cabari) giving the names of the people in each house, and some vocabulary notes. Found within the notebook were a vowel chart and a set of stapled notebook papers containing more genealogical charts with kin terms and a diagram of Hupdë cosmology as presented by Peter Silverwood. This notebook was water damaged after falling into a river, and can be seen in the image Athias-1984-Slides-0024.tif laid out to dry in the sun., El cuaderno que Renato Athias usaba durante su viaje por las comunidades hupdë en 1976.
