Description | Garifuna is an Arawakan language whose structure and vocabulary primarily derive from Arawak. Garifuna also contains Carib vocabulary, which was formerly more prevalent because it was utilized by males who used a masculine form of speech. Formerly, men and women employed different “male” and “female” speech to talk about the same concept. They were rooted in the Carib and Arawak languages, respectively. Remnants of this still persist. Garifuna also contains many borrowings from French, Spanish, and English. [Alison Broach, 2018] |
