DescriptionIn this paper, I will examine a set of fifteen semantically and/or syntactically distinguishable predicates dealing with perception and the principles which govern their lexicalization. I will begin by summarizing the properties of these verbs in English as discussed in two papers by Andy Rogers. Based on the evidence from English, I will formulate two principles which might govern the lexical realization of these predicates cross-linguistically. I will then test my hypotheses by considering data from several additional languages. Finally, I will attempt to revise my hypothesis in light of the new data.
