DescriptionIn this paper, the author hopes to accomplish the following goals: a) present some hypotheses on characteristics of Proto-Mayan. b) argue that besides being an imbalance, the lack of historical work in morphology and syntax is a mistake, since only by developing our view of phonology along with morphology and syntax can a realistic reconstruction be expected. c) argue that work on the morphology and syntax of Proto-Mayan is urgently needed to provide a solid basis for the evaluation of hypotheses concerning the relationships of Mayan with other families, for comparison of lexical root lists provides only "the weakest possible evidence" for genetic affiliation. d) discuss the possibility of defining the "genius", "feel", or "character" of a language in an explicit manner and how the resulting typo logical matrix might be used for comparative purposes.
