DescriptionThis recording documents the "festival of the corral" ("sk'in koral" in Tseltal) in the community of K'an Akil, near Chilón, which some families perform in the month of May, to celebrate in this month the day of the Holy Cross. This ritual is performed to protect the cattle, birds like chickens, turkeys, etc. They perform prayers so that the water doesn't end, for food, so that no illness catches them. They decorate the place of the ritual, mostly around the cross. In front of this they bury offerings: tortillas, corn gruel, chocolate stew, drinks and cigarettes; so that mother nature will give them what they ask for. Just the same way they kill the chickens that they will use to feed those present, which they do in front of the cross during the prayer. The feathers are gathered in one place so that they do not disperse. In the same way the natural spring is visited where they perform a prayer, and they offer chicken stew, drinks, and they place incense.
1. People are making the early preparations for the prayers (decorating the cross, sweeping the stable, setting up the canvas, etc)
2. Srs Manual Moreno and Miguel Pérez offer the festival and begin with the first prayer. Before this, the prayerman deposits the offering at the foot of the cross.
3. Sr. Moreno is praying in front of the cross.
4. Sr. Moreno is praying to bless the chickens that they will use to prepare the meal.
5. Sr. Moreno is praying to bless the food that will be consumed during the celebration.
