DescriptionThis recording contains the ritual called "departure of the flags" ("slok'ib bantera" in Tseltal), which takes place each year on the Sunday before the beginning of carnival in Oxchuc.
These flags are kept beforehand in the house of the elders. That day, the officials bring them to the courthouse and decorate them with ribbons, handkerchiefs and a red robe. Later, they circuit the various crosses of the town (the "stations"). At each station, a meeting is staged between the captain of the large neighborhood ("muk'ul kalpul") and the captain of the small neighborhood (bik'it kalpul) with their respective officials, extules and cornales, where they perform a salute with the flag. This meeting is called "tajtomba" in Tseltal. In their group, this ritual of the departure of the flags is a way of announcing that Carnival is begun.
At the beginning of the recording, don Manuel Gómez K'ulub, associate of this documentation project and carnival organizer together with the other principals of the town, provides some commentary in the house of the elders.
At the courthouse, also recorded are the inaugural words made by the mayor. Other places in which the recording was made are: the church of Saint Thomas, in the church of Calvary, and in the Big Field known as "Muk'ul akil".
