DescriptionIn the Kuna sacred gathering, normally a chief chants and his chant is then interpreted by a vocero or argar. Occasionally, however, village leaders will instead decide to "do it speaking" (sunmakkar sae), that is, to have a gathering in which several leaders speak to the assembled villagers about Kuna tradition. This recording is of one such gathering in September 1971 on Niatupu. At least three men spoke: Chief (Saila) Gonzalo Salcedo, Chief James Layan, and the argar Frances Smith. James Howe has a transcription and partial translation of the three speeches.
