DescriptionThis is a paper Rosemary Beam de Azcona wrote as an undergraduate which includes an imperfect phonemic transcription of a Zapotec folktale along with a phonetic transcription, morphemic gloss, and Spanish and English translations, along with commentary about some features of the language that are seen in the text. Commentary and analysis reflects the author's thinking as of 1997 after only two months of fieldwork. A more accurate phonemic transcription and morphemic gloss can be found in her 2004 UC Berkeley dissertation in Appendix B1 and more current ideas about this language's grammar are also found there.

The recording for the text studied here is archived as ZPS001R001. This resource includes a later phonetic transcription and a Spanish translation of the recorded text.
