DescriptionLa historia de los Ibelekana (grandes videntes o shamanes), the story of the Ibelekana. No. 1 of 3. The Ibelelekana or ner tummakan were a group of shaman culture heroes who lived on earth in the era following the great hero Ipeorkun and his successor Make. Their leader was named Tiekun (Diegun). The great neles came to earth on golden platters, were raised in separate villages, and then came together for an initial meeting. Several of them explored the features of the universe in spiritual journeys and then reported on their findings. Later they became corrupted, and finally Tiekun was assassinated. See Chapin 1989:128, Aiban Wagwa 2000:98-103.

This recording, which deals with origin and coming together of the Ipelelekana, is the first of three made by Gonzalo Salcedo. It is also the first recording of Kuna mythology or sacred history made by Chief Salcedo. It differs from all the rest, in that it records unstaged teaching session, in which Chief Salcedo instructed a man named Francis Smith, who had recently been named as an arkar or chief's spokesman, in the story so that Smith could interpret the story if Salcedo were to chant it. All the tapes that followed, made over the course of the 1970's, 1980s, and into the 1990s, were specially performed for the tape recorder without a Kuna audience present. Note, however, that except for a few remarks directed to Smith in the first tape, it is almost identical with all the others, which are also very similar to another teaching session that was not recorded.
