DescriptionTeotepec Eastern Chatino is a highly endangered Otomanguean language of Oaxaca, Mexico. A strong emphasis of this project has been placed on speaker training and community participation at historical and cultural documentation. Teotepec Chatino speakers have been trained to document the language historically and culturally with the aim of producing uniquely community-focused documentation to reflect Teotepec Chatino's rich but quickly disappearing body of narratives and procedural text. The resulting collection consists of an integrated corpus of transcribed and analyzed texts which augments previous work on Teotepec Chatino and is valuable to both native speakers and scholars.

Conversations with Alfredo Cortés Matus
This bundle consist of seven texts of various themes: 1) an autobiographical text about Alfredo's experience crossing the boarder and looking for work in the United States, 2) a talk about obtaining official papers like the Visas and Passports, 3) a discussion of how Alfredo became a carpenter and mason; this work in the community and how it is done, 4) explanation and description of how to construct a brick house; the costs and the persons involved, 5) description of the mason apprentices, their role in construction and how much they earn, 6) a description of how Alfredo may collaborate on a given project. And a description of how the houses are built today. A description of the work he does in the countryside as a farmer, 7) a description of what kinds of work Alfredo has to do aside from mason work. The planting of corn, beans, coffee, bananas, sugar cane and how he finished his formal education. Recorded with a Tascam HD-P2 Solid state field recorder and Shure SM10A Head-worn microphones in his patio in front of his house sitting between the kitchen and the living areas. This bundle consist of five texts that were cut from one recording: 1) Señor Andres describes the kinds of work he used to do with his father: The planting of corn, beans, tubers, sugarcane, chiles and bananas. He also describes how people lived before, 2) Andres describes his life as a musician, when he began music classes; he talks about some of his classmates. This bundle consists of three texts made from the original recording. The themes discussed are the following: 1) Andres talks about when he used to press sugar cane with a hand press and all the steps related to how the juice is made into a semi processed form of sugar known as "panela". He talks a little bit about the land where he used to cultivate maize and the processes related to its sowing and cultivation, 2) Andres describes how traditional stick houses with thatched roofs of cane leaves are constructed. He describes how the workers were fed and all of the aspect related to this type of construction. He also describes his own house and how the adobe bricks, the roof tiles and fired bricks are made, 3) Andres describes the times he would go to Oaxaca to play music with his band. Recorded with a Tascam HD-P2 solid state field recorder and Shure SM10A head-worn microphones in front of Señor Andres' house, outside during the afternoon. These texts were recorded with a Sony HDR-HC9 Mini DV HD Handy cam digital video recorder for linguistic analysis and to capture Andres' gestures while he describes these various processes to Reginaldo. This text is a talk by Apalonia Morena about how people lived before the 1950's war in Teotepec. Apalonia and her husband, Guadalupe Carmona, both moved to San Martín Caballero with many other members of Santa Lucía Teotepec and formed a small community close to the Oaxacan coast as a result of the Teotepec conflict. This bundle consist of eight texts: 1) Benito describes his work as a carpenter. He talks about how he was an assistant to a mechanic and why he did not become a one, 2) a description of the work of being a mechanic's assistant and his beginnings as a carpenter's apprentice, 3) Benito describes how he learned the trade of carpentry, the things that are involved in this work, how he learned to construct, the amount of time he has been working at this trade, how to measure for a table or a bed and why these items are painted, 4) describes different kinds of wood that are good for building furniture, the ones that are not good, where to get good wood for building and the price of different tables, 5) more description about carpentry and how much time it takes to build certain items. Benito talks about the table he is currently building. He describes and names the tools he uses in this trade and how much they cost, 6) Benito describes how much time it takes to extract timber from a tree, he describes some of these trees and names them. He talks about his chainsaw and the kind of oil it uses and how much he charges to work with it, 7) Benito describes how much he charges to make furniture and how much wood a given tree will yield, the type of chain his chainsaw needs for cutting these trees, how much wood is needed to build a house, how to build a house with wood and a tile roof and for how long this type of construction should last, 8) He talks about how much he charges for day labor when falling timber and where to get good wood. He talks about the value of doing good work and how to reconstruct a machete. At the end Reginaldo thanks Benito for sharing his knowledge. This bundle consists of one text with various themes. Don Ciriaco is an elderly gentleman in his early seventies. He talks about the work his father did before him and he discusses his work as a musician. Ciriaco describes how old he was when he entered the music profession, who his teacher was, the things he learned, who his band mates were, the places they played, and the instruments that they played. At the end he talks about his teacher and who he was. Reginaldo ends by thanking Señor Ciriaco for sharing his knowledge. She talks about weaving and different kinds of craft work of making things from clay, 3) a description about the different kinds of work her ancestors did in place of attending school and why young women were married very young, 4) further discussion about community ancestors, the work they did with cotton and the things that were given at a wedding, for the holy week and Easter, 5) A discussion about where people would get the things they needed, how much people suffered before and where she lived before with her parents, 6) Sirenia discusses the worked carried out by men before, the kinds of work that Sirenia did and the kinds of things mothers would teach their children. She also talked about the things people would eat and drink during community events, 7) Sirenia talked about the home economy with the addition of young women into the family through marriage. She talked about the work of midwifery and why people have stopped weaving. At the end Reginaldo thanks Señora Sirenia for sharing her knowledge. This event was recorded outside in the patio of Señora Sirenia's house. We used the Tascam HD-P2 Solid state field recorder and Shure SM10A Head-worn microphones. We made an additional recording with the Edirol R-09HR hand held field recorder. The texts were transcribed based on the Tascam recording with the left and right channels separated for each speaker. This bundle consist of eight texts of various themes: 1) a talk about All Saints Day, when it begins and how the local musicians play in the mass, 2) how the stewardship ('Mayordomo') festivals were carried out before and how they are done now, 3) a short talk about the consequences of the 1950's war in Teotepec and the division of the community, 4) a talk about how humans ought to live and what they should to do be in harmony with others, 5) a continuation of the discussion and advice on how people should try to live harmoniously, 6) a talk about the cause of the 1950's war and how the community was before it was divided by this conflict, 7) a talk about music and how parents used to ask their children to participate in the local band, 8) the end of the recording - no theme in particular. Tortillas
This bundle contains a recording that describes the steps to make tortillas, from the time the corn is cooked till it is a tortilla and photos that show all of the steps involved. This recording was transcribed and some of the photos were used to make a small book documenting this process to be used for pedagogical purposes. The text was given in the east room downstairs inside of Rufino Quintas López's house. Recorded with a Tascam HD-P2 Solid state field recorder and Shure SM10A Head-worn Microphones., Este paquete contiene una grabación que describe los pasos para hacer tortillas, desde cuando se cose el maíz hasta cuando ya es tortilla y incluye fotos que muestran todo este proceso. La grabación fue transcrito y algunas de las fotos fueron usados para producir un pequeño libro que documenta este proceso para ser utilizado con fines pedagógicos. El texto fue dado en la sala oriental de la planta baja en el interior de la casa de Rufino López Quintas.
