Counting in Koasati
The following information on numbers was provided by Bel Abbey of Elton, Louisiana during a course in linguistic fieldmethods at Tulane University in the Fall of 1977. Since the analysis of Koasa:ti is still in its initial stages, there may very well be some mistakes in the way it is presented here. But since some of the younger speakers of the language do not know the numbers very well, we hope that this preliminary listing might be of some interest., La siguiente información sobre los números fue proporcionada por Bel Abbey de Elton, Luisiana, durante un curso sobre métodos de campo lingüístico en Universidad de Tulane en el otoño de 1977.

The lexicalization of perception
In this paper, I will examine a set of fifteen semantically and/or syntactically distinguishable predicates dealing with perception and the principles which govern their lexicalization. I will begin by summarizing the properties of these verbs in English as discussed in two papers by Andy Rogers. Based on the evidence from English, I will formulate two principles which might govern the lexical realization of these predicates cross-linguistically. I will then test my hypotheses by considering data from several additional languages.

The Mayan antipassive Some facts and fictions
In this paper, I will present some of the problems encountered. My data comes primarily from Pocomam, Quíche, Kekchi, Ixil, and Jacaltec since those are the languages on whích I have the most data available. It also turns out that an interesting variety of data is thereby accumulated. I will also add fragmentary data from other languages to the extent that I can. I will show that what amount to different uses of the antipassive in some languages (Pocomam and Ixil, for example) correspond to completely different verb forms in others (Quiche and Jacaltec, for example). I will introduce terminology which will enable one to differentiate these various functions and forms. I will also show that there are significant differences across the family in the formal characteristics of the antipassive when appearing in its agent promotion function. The degree to which it resembles an intransitive verb and the method by whích it receives person marking vary in interesting ways. Finally, I will turn to the implications of this data for comparative Mayan. Despite the anomalies and variation, a great number of similarities will be seen across the family. A good deal more knowledge and analysis is undoubtedly necessary before the whole picture for proto-Mayan can be outlined. Nevertheless, I will propose two hypotheses concerning the nature of antipassive-like phenomena in proto-Mayan., En este trabajo, presentaré algunos de los problemas encontrados.

Mexican Sign Language
In this text, we will begin by answering some of the following question. First, we will peresent the limited data we have regarding the identification, extension and the number of users of this language. Next, we'll observe some of the sociolinguistic variation in the Federal District. Also, we will compare the Federal District's sign langugae with Monterrey's, to estimate the geographic variation in the country. Lastly, we will examine the external relations of Mexican Sign Language (LSM/LMM) with other sign languages; especially with American Sign Language (LSA/LMNA)., En el presente trabajo, empezaremos a contestar algunas de estas preguntas.

Negation in Koasati
In this paper we provide a preliminary description of negation in Koasati. In particular, we examine the interaction of negation with the various verb classes established by Haas (1946a) on the basis of subject cross-reference marking. Although most verbal inflection appears to be independent of verb class, we show that the method of negation used with a verb, like subject cross-reference marking, depends on the class of the verb being negated., En este trabajo se proporciona una descripción preliminar de la negación en Koasati.

Phonological Description in New Spain
Traditionally it has been affirmed that the colonial grammars of American languages were especially deficient in their treatment of phonology. Nevertheless, by focusing on their achievements rather than their failures, and considering them in terms of contemporary levels of linguistic knowledge rather than our modern expectations, it can be argued that missionary linguists advanced in phonological description significantly. Based on material of 20 authors who wrote about a dozen languages of six families of New Spain between 1547 and 1767, it is shown that they identified numerous types of new sounds that did not exist in Spanish, were able to assess phonological data in phonological terms, recognized phonological and morphophonological processes, recorded phonotactic data, used minimum pairs to identify distinctive oppositions, and justified their analysis with phonological argumentation. The work of the Franciscans Olmos, Gilberti, Lagunas and Cárceres, and of the Jesuits Rincón and Carochi, in particular, stand out by their descriptive acuity. It is important to recognize that the scope of this period were made possible in part by the participation of a cast of native speakers intelligent, reflective, and experienced in the manipulation of their languages as objects of study., Tradicionalmente se ha afirmado que las gramáticas coloniales de lenguas americanas eran especialmente deficientes en su tratamiento de la fonología . The Plurality Split
Abstract. In this paper, I will define a notion of split plurality, present in many of the world's languages, whereby the feature of plurality will be shown to divide the class of nouns in a language into two types, one for which the opposition of plurality is significant, the other for which it is somehow neutralized. The examples given will show that in many ways the split does not seem to be arbitrary or language specific, but rather seems to follow a well-defined hierarchy of features based on likelihood cf participation in the speech event., Abstracto. 1974. Predicate nominal and transitive verbal expressions of interpersonal relations
Languages can potentially make use of two types of construction, predicate nominal or transitive verbal, to express kinship relations between two individuals . These two types may coexist in a given language as either virtually interchangeable or semantically distinct alternatives . In several North American languages the two types have become conflated into a single split paradigm. The characteristics of these split systems are sufficiently parallel cross-linguistically lo suggest that they are the result, in part at least, of general properties that constrain or influence linguistic structure. We claim that this variation in morphosyntax responds to two factors: an underlying tension in possessive relations, which can be naturally given or socially mediated, and the relative pragmatic or propositional orientation of transitive verbal versus predicate nominal constructions. Additionally, we show that the way split paradigms develop may result from the interaction of pragmatic and morphosyntactic facets of linguistic systems as communicative devices conveying propositional content and achieving pragmatic goals., Los idiomas pueden hacer uso de dos tipos de construcción, predicado nominal o transitivo verbal, para expresar relaciones de parentesco entre dos individuos. 1994. Prosodic types of syllables in San Baltasar Chichicapan
Within this panorama, I will talk about the Zapotec of San Baltasar Chichicapan in the district of Oco'tlan, southeast the city of Oaxaca, Mexico. This variant of Zapotec is confined, apparently, to a single town, although it would be convenient to raise data in the surrounding region to confirm this. My own language study began in 1995, when I spent two months working in Catemaco, Veracruz, as part of the Project for the Documentation of Mije-Zoquean and Zapotecan Languages, under the direction of Terrence Kaufman and John Juesteson, with the main objective of collecting material for a language dictionary. Lucino San Juan San German, native of Chichicapan and native speaker of his language, was my informant. I continued this work during the summers of 1999 (2 months), 2000 (2 months) and 2001 (1 month), when the project was known as the Project for the Documentation of Languages of Mesoamerica (PDLMA) and, as of 2000 , with the addition of Roberto Zavala as co-director. Proto-Mayan -oq The intransitive irrealis suffix
In this paper, the author will examine data from a number of Mayan languages dealing with the expression of subjunctive- like meanings primarily among intransitive verbs. It will be seen that the suffixes which are used in the various languages are very similar and probably have developed from a common ancestor. He will also attempt to specify the contexts in which the Proto-Mayan (PM) suffix was used , based on the contexts in which the attested suffixes occur., En este documento, el autor examinará los datos de una cantidad de lenguas mayas que se ocupan de la expresión de significados similares a los subjuntivos principalmente entre los verbos intransitivos.

He believes that the grammar of Carochi can be considered a new edition - enlarged, amended, and commented - of that of Rincon, since much of what has been praised of Carochi is clearly delineated in the one of Rincon. Things like the structure of the presentation, the text, and the examples show great coincidence between the grammars. Basically, in this study the author will show that Carochi's grammar is the continuation of that of Rincon., en este articulo, el autor afirma sus argumentos sobre la gramática de dos autores, Antonio del Rincon y Horacio Carochi. Some hypotheses on syntactic and morphological aspects of Proto-Mayan
In this paper, the author hopes to accomplish the following goals: a) present some hypotheses on characteristics of Proto-Mayan. b) argue that besides being an imbalance, the lack of historical work in morphology and syntax is a mistake, since only by developing our view of phonology along with morphology and syntax can a realistic reconstruction be expected. c) argue that work on the morphology and syntax of Proto-Mayan is urgently needed to provide a solid basis for the evaluation of hypotheses concerning the relationships of Mayan with other families, for comparison of lexical root lists provides only "the weakest possible evidence" for genetic affiliation. d) discuss the possibility of defining the "genius", "feel", or "character" of a language in an explicit manner and how the resulting typo logical matrix might be used for comparative purposes., En este trabajo, el autor espera lograr los siguientes objetivos: a) presentar algunas hipótesis sobre las características de la lengua proto-maya. b) argumentar que además de ser un desequilibrio, la falta de trabajo histórico en morfología y sintaxis es un error, ya que solo al desarrollar nuestra visión de la fonología junto con la morfología y la sintaxis puede esperarse una reconstrucción realista. c) argumentar que el trabajo sobre la morfología y la sintaxis del proto-maya se necesita con urgencia para proporcionar una base sólida para la evaluación de las hipótesis relativas a las relaciones mayas con otras familias, para la comparación de listas de raíces léxicas que proporcionan "la evidencia más débil posible " de afiliación genética. d) Discutir la posibilidad de definir de manera explícita el "genio", "sentido" o "carácter" de un lenguaje y cómo podría ser usada la matriz tipológica resultante para comparar. usado para fines comparativos., Smith Stark, Thomas C. 1976. A stemma for manuscripts to learn a Mexican language (1547) by Andrés de Olmos
Given the existence of six versions of Arte para Aprendar la Lengua Mexicana by Olmos, an important question arises: how can we know what Olmos actually wrote? This question would be easy to answer if we had a Olmos manuscript, but it does not seem that this is the case. It would also be easy to answer if the six manuscripts were the same. But anyone who is familiar with the transmission of texts by means of manuscript copying knows that it is almost impossible make a handwritten copy of a document without changing the text. This explains, in part, the fact that all copies of Olmos have differences. In this paper, then, I would like to discuss one of the techniques that has been developed to help determine the original form of work, the construction of a family tree or the attempt to establish relationships between testimonies of an original or archetype with what we want to know, and see what this can tell us in the case of the different versions of Olmos., Dada la existencia de seis versiones del Arte para Aprender la Lengua Mexicana de Olmos, surge una pregunta importante: ¿cómo podemos saber lo que Olmos realmente escribió? Suppletion according to the recipient of 'give' in some Otomanguean languages
In this article, the author collected some examples of the same kind of suppletivism in three Mexican languages of the Otomanguean family: Zapotec, Mixtec and Mazahua. the author decided to publish them now to complement the examples that Comrieha could gather and at the same time to express his affection and respect for Georges Baudot, friend, colleague, exalted teacher and outstanding researcher of Mesoamerican literature and history. Several forms of Zapotec '- have supplementary themes for the verb "give". The distribution of these depends on the grammatical person of the receiver of the given thing. Three Colonial Zapotec documents from San Antonio Ocotlán
In December of 2001, Alfonso Torres Rodríguez y Laura Rodríguez Cano found three Zapotec documents of the 18th century in the Archive of the Executive Power of the state of Oaxaca. These documents are from the town of San Antonio, near Santo Domingo Ocotlan under Oaxaca's jurisdiction. The Archive contains a total of 34 files which includes 44 distinct texts; among them the three texts in Zapotec. Since February of 2002, we started analyzing and translating the Zapotec texts in the Colonial Zapotec seminar led by Thomas Smith Stark. This seminar is part of the Zapotec Language course program of Meso-american Studies at the School of Philosophy and Literature and the Institute of Philosophical Investigations in the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Tinkered pans, charlock, coulter and share- Revising Thompson's Catalog
In this paper we will discuss the limitations of Thompson's Catalog [A Catalog of Maya Hieroglyphs (1962)] and the ways in which it can be improved to provide a more effective tool for glyphic research . We begin with a general discussion of the weaknesses of Thompson's Catalog . This is followed by more specific discussions of two areas -- systems for transcribing the glyphs, and methods for revising Thompson ' s classification of elements in the writing system.

Transitive nouns and split possessive paradigms in Central Guerrero Nahuatl
Central Guerrero Nahuatl presents a split paradigm in which two-argument possessive constructions can be expressed either directly, as possessed predicate nouns, or inversely, employing verbal subject and object prefixes . We demonstrate that this is a Uto-Aztecan trait . Comparative linguistic data suggests that this variation in morphosyntactic marking responds to an underlying tension in possessive relations, which can be naturally given or socially mediated. The development of split paradigms indicates that language structure and change are not simple reflections of formal operations, but instead manifest the interaction of pragmatic and morphosyntactic facets of linguistic systems as communicative devices for conveying propositional content and achieving performative goals., náhuatl central de Guerrero presenta un paradigma dividido en el cual dos construcciones de argumentos posesivos pueden ser expresados directamente, como sustantivos predicativos posesivos, o a la inversa, empleando sujeto verbal y objeto prefijo. The use of theoretically possible roots as an elicitation technique The case of Chichicapan Zapotec
Paper prepared for the 76th Annual Meeting of the Linguistic Society of America, Hyatt Regency San Francisco Hotel, San Francisco, California, U. S. A., 3-6 January 2002. The presentation is programed for Saturday, 4 January, at 15:20, as part of the special session "Papers from the Snake-Jaguar Project: The Project for the Documentation of the Languages of Meso-America" Abstract One of the techniques used on the Snake Jaguar Project for obtaining lexical material is the elicitation of theoretically possible roots to see if they are actually attested in word formation. This method requires a considerable ínvestment of time and effort. In 2000, 1 spent nearly 85 hours during 21 days applying this technique with a speaker of Chichicapan Zapotec. I produced a total of about 37,500 stimuli, nearly 1 every 8 seconds, and obtained a total of 2,376 positive responses as a result, an average of about 28 per hour. In this paper, I describe the procedure followed and evaluate the results obtained, based on a sample of 280 roots: how many roots were produced, how many of them were new, and how many roots known from other sources were not picked up by this method., Documento preparado para la 76 ª Reunión Anual de la Sociedad Lingüística de América, Hotel Hyatt Regency San Francisco, San Francisco, California, EE.UU., 3-6 de enero de 2002.
Women, music, and wine The happy life of 16th Century Zapotecs
Based on its size, the Cordova Vocabulary promises to be a source of important information about the life and culture of the Zapotec of the 16th century. It's possible to discover something about the three terms used in the title: Women, music and wine. The author gathered this vocabulary by conducting an electronic search for some of the key letter sequences. In total, the author gathered 650 entrees: 245 about sexual activity, 222 about music and dance, and 180 about the identity, the production and the use of alcoholic beverages.
