DescriptionInterview with musician and educator Pedro Solano Falcón along with University of Cuenca music professor Carlos Freire about Lalay Raymi and Carnaval. Tayta Pedro discusses instruments and songs associated with Carnaval/Lalay Raymi in addition to the Cañari worldview that permeates this agrarian, syncretic celebration. Worried that younger generations were not learning or practicing the indigenous practices associated with Pawkar Raymi (Lalay Raymi), overwhelmed instead by mestizo Carnaval traditions, Pedro re-invigorated this familial tradition by creating a public forum for many neighboring indigenous Cañari communities at an indigenous organization called TUCAYTA in the late 1980s for Cañaris to perform lalay songs and share food. See May2021_Compiled_Liner_Notes_in_English_&_Spanish.pdf for more information about the musical genres and instruments referenced or appearing in this file.
