DescriptionThis is a bilingual (Q'eqchi'-Spanish) book about Mangroves with a focus on the intersection of traditional ecological knowledge of the Q'eqchi' people of Belieze and marine conservation.

The authors of the Qʼeqchiʼ book are Robby Thigpen and Edgar Fernando Pop Tuil from Livingston, Izabal, Guatemala. My coauthor heard about the project somehow and found a way to contact me.

The Qʼeqchiʼ Maya live in southern Belize and Izabel, Guatemala.

Qʼeqchiʼ [kek] is paired with Spanish [es] for Guatemala. This is the first biocultural STEM curriculum written in Qʼeqchiʼ Maya. Edgar is from Livingston, Izabal, Guatemala. This is the second language in Guatemala where we used our new class of language documentation tools to document the language used to discuss concrete and tangle aspects of the ecosystems that the Q’eqchi’ of Livingston depend on for food security etc.

My Q’eqchi brother did not have a computer to use when he ethnotranslated these biocultural STEM curricula. He asked me to send him a trad doc with large spaces between each sentence or paragraph to be ethnotranslated. He had the trad doc printed and the did the work by hand. He then typed the translation into the trad doc on his cell phone and sent it to me for formatting. As a result, there may be typographical errors in this text. Nevertheless, I respect the determination that Edgar had that his people should have materials like this for the linguistically diverse education systems of Guatemala and Belize.
