DescriptionIn 1981 James Howe made a visit of about ten days to Sasardi-Mulatupu in eastern San Blas (primary field site of anthropologists Joel Sherzer and Carlo Severi). While there, Howe recorded two cassettes with Saila (Chief) Muristo Pérez at home in Pérez' house.

In the text described here, Saila Muristo chants a history about Jesus Christ. He sings at home in the manner of chiefly gathering (see Sherzer 1983, Howe 1986), although without another chief to sing replies at the end of each line. The story is part of a corpus of narratives typical of chiefly lore in eastern San Blas, in the sphere of influence first of Inanaginya and Inabaginya, later of Yabiliginya and Kauiti. These narratives are influenced by Christianity and popular Latin American history. The story of Jesus Christ performed here is largely Kuna in content: Christ's persecution and crucifixion is covered in just a few verses, and the rest of the chant is devoted to his journey after death through the layers of the Kuna cosmos.
