Description [Indigenous]
Language of Indigenous Description
DescriptionThis collection contains materials collected, compiled, or created by Terrence Kaufman during his career researching the languages of Latin America. This collection does not contain materials that were collected under the auspices of an organized project (such as the Francisco Marroquín Linguistic Project or the Project for the Documentation of the Languages of MesoAmerica) nor does it contain materials for languages that were part of Kaufman's sustained independent research (which can be found in collections such as his Mayan Languages and Huasteca Nawa collections). In total, there are 43 folders containing 80 text documents, 202 files containing scanned images of file slips, one image and one video.

The folders in this collection either contain analytical documents written by Kaufman about one or more Latin American languages or contain scanned images of file slips that were prepared by Kaufman. The data on these file slips either derives from elicitation conducted by Kaufman himself (as in the Suruí and Dení file slips) or were compiled from published sources by Kaufman, who grouped together perceived cognates and often made annotations on the file slips themselves (as with the Hokan file slips). The following sets of file slips are found in this collection:
  • Comparative Hokan file slips
  • Comparative Pomoan file slips
  • Yuman etymologies file slips
  • Uto-Aztecan Numic branch file slips
  • Dení ethnobiology file slips

Comparative Oto-Manguean: Chinantec languages
This resource contains comparative matierials on Chinantecan languages. Dr. Kaufman began working on the topic of Comparative Oto-Manguean (OM) in 1983. The origins of these compiled data were a graduate seminar called "Linguistic Reconstruction" in which Dr. Kaufman farmed out the different OM languages on his graduate students to work on. These data represent a survey of claims that others made about OM and a summary of what Dr. Kaufman thought was correct. The sources were all books or monographs made from theses and/or the microfilms of theses, all of which came out of the University of Pennsylvania. All of these theses were written by SIL linguists who were supervised by Henry Hoenigswald. These data were never typed up. In the summer of 2010, Dr. Kaufman ran a week-long workshop on OM as part of the Project for the Documentation of the Languages of MesoAmerica (PDLMA). These materials are organized in AILLA by language family. Each of the following resources contains comparative materials on the language family named in the title. Comparative Oto-Manguean: Zapotecan languages
This resource contains comparative material on the Zapotecan language family. Dení and Suruí ethnobiology notes 1
These data were collected by Kaufman in July and August 1993 in Porto Velho, Rondonia state, Brazil. Dan Everett had invited TK to Brazil to give lectures on field methods to a group of SIL linguists. Everett and Robert Dixon organized a workshop on grammar-writing for SIL people in Northern Brazil; about 15 SIL linguists were there for 6 weeks; they attended lectures in the mornings and gave reports in the afternoons Kaufman agreed to teach only if he could do field work in the afternoons. These file slips were collected during this trip. The Dení data were from two brothers, Kazupana & Haku (the only names that Kaufman noted for them), of the same father, different mothers, and about 25-30 years difference in their ages. They were from Merrão, a town on the river Cuniuá (spelled Kunyuwá by Kaufman) in the state of Amazonas in Brazil. The Suruí data were from Pedro Surui, whose name in his language was Kabéte:m; he was from Linha Onze (Line Eleven), Rondonia, Brazil. Both Dení and Suruí are noteworthy because they both have as many animal names as plant names (where many cultures in that area have more plant names). Data collection dates: Dení Animals: 28 hours, 21 July to 3 August 1993 Plants: 23 hours, 3-15 August 1993 Suruí Animals: 22 hours, 22 July to 2 August 1993 Plants: 22 hours, 3-15 August 1993 C00202: handwritten notes on Dení mammal terms C00204: handwritten notes on Dení bird terms C00207: handwritten notes on Dení reptile terms C00210: handwritten notes on Dení bug terms C00212: loose sheet of handwritten notes: related to data collection C00213: loose sheet of handwritten notes: related to data collection C00214: loose sheet of handwritten notes: related to data collection C00215: types of bugs (with at least three members): Counting of bug types in Dení and Suruí; handwritten notes C00216: loose sheet of handwritten notes: related to data collection in Dení and Suruí C00217: loose sheet of handwritten notes: related to data collection C00218: loose sheet of handwritten notes: related to data collection C00219: loose sheet of handwritten notes: related to data collection in Dení and Suruí C00220: loose sheet of handwritten notes: related to data collection C00221: loose sheet of handwritten notes: related to data collection in Dení and Suruí C00234: handwritten notes for the preparation of Dení and Suruí ethnobiology C00243: handwritten notes on Dení birds, which are eaten, these are unglossed C00253: handwritten notes on Dení plants and their uses DEN-PL: Dení Plant Names: typed document, Estos datos fueron recopilados por Kaufman en julio y agosto de 1993 en Porto Velho, estado de Rondonia, Brasil. Languages of Middle America
A printed map of Caribbean America on which Kaufman hand drew language boundaries and wrote in abbreviations for language names for the languages of Middle America (Mesoamerica). He crossed out the word "Caribbean" in the map title and replaced it with "Languages of Middle" so that the title reads "Languages of Middle America." There is no key for the language abbreviations. In the bottom left corner, Kaufman wrote: Family, Subgroup, and Language Isolate Map of Middle America Time ca 1000-1500 AD T Kaufman 1966 and 1968 The printed map of Caribbean America is from the Goode's Series of Base Maps, map prepared by Henry M. Suruí ethnobiological file slips
These data were collected by Kaufman in July and August 1993 in Porto Velho, Rondônia state, Brazil. The Suruí data were from Pedro Surui, whose name in his language was Kabéte:m; he was from Linha Onze, Rondônia, Brazil. Yuman etymologies file slips
Alan Spafford was a student of Terrence Kaufman (TK) at the University of Pittsburgh. He undertook to do this research as a project for a class using the book "A Comparative Study of Yuman Consonantism" (1968, De Gruyter press) by Alan Campbell Wares. The data are ordered by semantic domain. Terrence Kaufman worked on Hokan languages mainly during the 1980s, though he started his research in the 1970s. The languages mentioned in the file slips are Walapai, Mohave, Maricopa, Cocopa, Diegueño, Tipai, Papai, Kiliwa, Havasupai. The possible reconstruction is in the bottom left corner (*item).
