DescripciónThis collection of audio recordings (derived from the original video recordings), accompanied by Nahuatl transcripts with parallel Spanish translations and some Nahuatl-to-English versified interlinear translations, documents the June 1998 pilgrimage to the sacred mountain Postectli in the municipio of Chicontepec, Veracruz, Mexico. The pilgrimage was organized by Encarnación (Cirilo) Téllez Hernández, a master Nahua ritual specialist from the pseudonymous community of Amatlán in the municipio of Ixhuatlán de Madero, Veracruz, Mexico. Ten hours of recordings cover three days of preparations and ritual activity in Amatlán (June 1 to June 3) leading up to the actual trek to the Nahua community of Ichcacuatitla at the base of Postectli (June 4, but not videorecorded), with a half hour of video appended at the end, recording portions of several ritual offerings and cleansings on the ascent to the mountain peak (June 5). The recordings include elicitations spoken in Nahuatl and Spanish by the pilgrimage participants, with chants and commentary delivered in Nahuatl by six ritual specialists (and untranscribed segments of a ritual specialist's chants in Otomí).
