Technical DescriptionThe cover of Native American Discourse, with Mastaias and Olowikdinappi. This is the photograph where chiefs and ritual leaders were shocked that Sherzer was taking pictures. This was THE CHIEF who visited. No one knew where he came from and no one knew where he was going. He was rather poor. He asked for some jeans from someone. He is not wearing a tie. The chiefs chant dialogically to one another in front of the gathering house audience. The primary chanter, who just happens to be a chief too, leads the chant. The secondary chief (the one who was being chanted to), translates the chant into everyday Kuna for the rest. There were about 10 chiefs for Mulutuppu at the time. They traded off responsibilities. Like many cultures with chiefs, being a chief comes with both responsibilities and benefits. The benefits do not include material possessions.
